Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was the first martial art to dominate the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and it remains one of the most effective forms of self-defense and an essential component of modern mixed martial arts (MMA).
A grappling-centric art, the goal of BJJ is to take your opponent to the ground, control them through superior position and technique, and finish the fight by making your opponent submit by applying a submission attack. With an emphasis on technique and leverage, BJJ is designed to allow a smarter person defeat a stronger foe with ease, even when physically outsized.
BJJ is often described as a game of “physical chess” due to it’s depth and technical nature, where each and every move must be thought about several steps ahead. It’s an excellent sport to train physical skills as well as their mental attributes and problem solving abilities.
BJJ is the art of real-time problem solving combined with technical fighting skills, athleticism and calculated movements.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be trained for many beneficial reasons of self-development as well as self defense, sport grappling (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts competition and has found its way into the training regimen of nearly every successful martial artist worldwide.
Although BJJ can seem daunting for many people at first glance, the art is welcoming and viable for all ages and both sexes, any and all body types. The art has an element of creativity that allows the practitioners to take on their own personal style that suits the individual.
The first step to your BJJ journey is giving it a go, try it out and you may surprise yourself!
